Replacing a roof isn’t cheap. That’s why it’s important to repair your roof - rather than replacing it - whenever possible. Unless the shingles or tiles on your roof are completely worn out, repairs are able to fix many issues you might be having - including leaking. Orange County roof repair often addresses a group of very common problems. Here are some of the most common repairs that we do:
1. Damaged flashing.
Flashing is a piece of metal that adds extra protection to your roof’s extra vulnerable points. It’s found around skylights, around chimneys, and sometimes in the valleys of your roof where two surfaces meet. These areas are more prone to leaks, and are harder to get shingles and tiles into properly.
Over time, flashing will wear down, creating leaks. Sometimes it can also be damaged by high winds or hail. Other times, the flashing wasn’t installed properly in the first place. It may hold up for a while, but eventually, the improper installation will cause problems - including leaks.
Flashing is used on many different types of roofs, so this is a common Orange County roof repair across the board.
2. Clogged gutters.
This one isn’t really a roof repair, per se. But you’d be surprised at the effect that clogged, falling-down, or improperly installed gutters can have on your roof. The gutters are essential for draining off water, and if they get backed up, you may wind up with leaks or other problems on your roof.
Consistently clogged gutters may cause your roof to wear out more quickly. This can, of course, cost a lot of money over the long term. So your best bet here is to make a habit of cleaning your gutters regularly. Regular gutter maintenance can keep you from paying for more Orange County roof repair later.
3. Cracked or missing tiles
Tile roofs are some of the most common options in Orange County. They’re beautiful, and they’re quite durable. But they’re not 100% indestructible, by any means. In fact, hail and high winds can damage already-worn clay and concrete roof tiles.
Luckily, tile roofs are sturdy enough that it’s very, very rare for the entire roof to need replacing. Even catastrophic hail storms aren’t usually enough to damage the entire roof. But it’s not that unusual for a few tiles to take some damage. Left unfixed, that damage can let water leak into your sub-roofing material. And that can cause some serious long-term issues.
4. Missing asphalt shingles
Asphalt shingles are cheaper than tile, and that’s partially because they need to be replaced more often. These tiles will curl up at the edges when they’ve been exposed to too much weather. At this point, it’s time to replace them.
But if most of your shingles are in good condition, a few can still fail and cause problems. Again, this is often the case with hail or wind damage. High winds can rip a few tiles off, leaving parts of your roof exposed to the weather. Replacing a few shingles is a common Orange County roof repair.
Like the spots where your roof joins your chimney, the valleys in your roof made by two surfaces meeting are vulnerable to problems. These valleys are often protected by flashing, but they may not be. And if you leave limbs, leaves, and other debris in these valleys, your roof will take damage over time.
Again, this is more of a maintenance issue than a repair one. You want to clean your roof at least annually to ensure that these valleys aren’t collecting a lot of debris. If you don’t do this, you’ll likely find yourself in need of Orange County roof repair as these areas of your roof begin to leak and cause other problems.
When it comes to roofing repair, most of the necessary repairs are fairly common ones. But some are less common. No matter how common your needed roofing repair, you’ll want to have an expert deal with it. Expert Orange County roofers will be able to quickly assess your problem and deal with it in the most cost-efficient manner possible.

How often should I get my gutters cleaned to keep problems like this from happening?
Well, you definitely want to keep and eye on them, and if they're getting clogged and not directing water flow correctly, have them cleaned. Other than that, cleaning them once or twice a year is typically enough. It all just depends on your area, though, and what kinds of things are around to clog up the gutter system.
I have noticed some of the caulk around my chimney separating. Is that something I can fix myself, or should I have the professionals look at it?
If it's just a small area, and you're handy, you can probably replace a bit of caulk with a caulk gun and the proper type of caulk. However, getting out on the roof is dangerous and can also cause damage to the roofing material itself. So you definitely need to be careful when deciding to do repairs like this on your own.
