Are you hiring an Orange County roofing contractor to put a new roof on your home? Maybe your main goals is to increase your curb appeal and the value of your home, or to replace a worn out roof. Either way, you’ll find that the re-roofing process requires some preparation on your part.

Whether your roofers are working on your home or your business, you’ll what to take certain steps to prepare yourself for the process, and to get through it well.

Keep in mind that you may need to move out of your home or shut down your business temporarily, especially during the early phases. Re-roofing can be messy and even dangerous at times. It’s best to talk to your roofing contractor ahead of the process to see if they have advice on whether or not you can stay in your home.

Whether you decide to stay in your home during the process, though, you’ll need to take some steps to prepare yourself for the re-roofing. Here are some tips to follow before and during the process.

  • Secure loose items. Even the most solid home can be shaken during the process of demolishing an old roof to prepare for the replacement. It’s a good idea to secure items on the walls and on shelves. Your best bet is to take down any fragile or loose items, which are most likely to get knocked around during the re-roofing.
  • Prepare to clean. If you have open beams in your ceiling or attic, it’s likely that dust will filter down during the re-roofing process. Be prepared to clean up your home after the process is finished. And if you want to keep dust off of any important items, take the time to cover or move them before the contractors get started.
  • Plan to stay inside or off the property. Even the most careful roofing contractors can’t prevent debris from falling during the re-roofing process. It’s best to plan to keep pets inside or well away from the house, if you have a large yard. Rather than letting the dog out onto the back yard, you may need to take him out on a leash further away from the roof line. And plan to keep the kids inside or take them to a park. Running around outside the house could be dangerous.
  • Get ready for some noise. If your pets are sensitive to noise and you’ll be gone at work during the day while the contractors are working, you may consider kenneling them for the duration of the re-roofing process. It’s certainly noisy, and there’s no way to prevent that! You can limit some noise by keeping your windows closed, but if your pets and children are sensitive to noise, consider vacating your property during the contractors’ working hours.
  • Stay out of the way. Contractors need to be able to move freely around your property, and to drive their vehicles into your driveway, etc. Parking your car near the roofline during the demolition process is especially dangerous, and contractors can’t be held responsible if the falling debris damages your car.
  • Talk to your contractor about electricity. Though more tools these days are battery-powered, contractors will still need access to electricity during the re-roofing process. Talk to your Orange County roofing contractor about these arrangements. Your contract may state that you need to provide the contractors with at least one outlet. This could mean giving them access to an outdoor outlet, or running an extension cord from your home or garage.
  • Ask about your satellite dish. Proper installation of your satellite dish is essential. In fact, improper installation can void your roofing warranty. If you’re planning to install a satellite dish, talk to your contractor before the re-roofing begins so that they can properly plan for this.
  • Stay off the roof. Of course, any materials or ladders brought by the roofing contractors are off limits. But it’s important that you don’t use your own equipment to climb onto the roof, either. When you’ve hired the best roofing contractors in Orange County, you can trust the contractors to do their job properly, and won’t feel the need to climb onto the roof (potentially voiding the materials’ warranty) to check on the process.

With tips like these and a great roofing company, you can get through the re-roofing process unscathed and with a beautiful new roof. The easier you can make things on your roofing contractors, the faster the process will go.
