Easy Solution

If only you could make those rooftop stains vanish with a wave of your hand. But unless you possess some special powers, the intervention of an ordinary human will be required. Certainly, you can call for the assistance of an Orange County roofing company to remove the stains, mildew, and other imperfections caused by the passage of time. (Very few old roofs are without them.) Or you can take care of the matter yourself. Either way, the task must be performed. Not only are those unattractive blemishes offensive to your aesthetic sense; they very likely are lowering your home’s market value.

In most cases, the imperfections you notice are signs of mildew or fungus. Whether you opt for the help of an Orange County roofing contractor or the do-it-yourself method, the problem probably can be solved by a very common household item – bleach.  What you’ll be doing with this handy liquid is creating a cleaning solution capable of removing the blemishes. Ideally, you’ll want the solution to consist of 25% bleach and 75% water.

Once you’re done mixing your solution, fill a garden pump sprayer with the liquid and focus the spray on the mildew, fungus, and other stains. Naturally, you’ll want to aim accurately.  Misaimed bleach that strikes surrounding plants can do them a great deal of damage.  For maximum protection, it’s a good idea to cover nearby foliage.  Also, make sure no errant spray touches other parts of the roof.

To really be certain the cleansing is done right, consider a professional for the job. If you live in Newport Beach, for example, a qualified Newport Beach roofing company can ensure safe, reliable stain removal.

Looking at our home from the street, it looked like our roof had variances in the color of the roof. The front was much lighter than the back. Ends up it was a combination of sun, weather and the fiberglass texture starting to come off of our asphalt shingles. I wish this was just a cleaning, but I don't think so.

Yes, most asphalt shingles are covered with granules that give it texture and protect the asphalt. As the roof gets older these granules can start to come loose and will typically start showing up in your rain gutters. It makes the roof look pretty bad as this takes place but isn't always an emergency. I.e. you may be able to get a few more years out of it. We can come out and give you a better idea if you like.

So we're trying to get our roof cleaned up. There's issues with multiple things but one of them is the discoloration of the roof. There are sections that look more faded than others and another section that looks like mold is there year round. It doesn't get a lot of sun. What should we do?

Thanks for your question Paul.
Yes, this is an issue for many of our clients. I.e. a mix of issues that may, or may not require maintenance, repairs or replacement. Sometimes it's a mix of these. For instance, if a roof is still in good shape and has some years left on it, sometimes we can blend asphalt shingles in handling the fading. And mold can sometimes be cleaned off using methods appropriate for the issue. You might just want to call us and we'd be happy to discuss solutions or even come out and take a look for you.

Our tile roof is VERY dirty. It definitely looks stained by years of mildew etc. I'm very reluctant just to have it cleaned or having any type of roof stain removal done. Can you give me any additional input that would help me through this decision?
