So it’s time to replace the old roof on your home? Or maybe you’re doing a new build, but can’t decide what type of roof to put on your home.
With all the options on the market today - from metal to asphalt to clay and concrete tile - it can be difficult to pick a roofing material that will work best for you and your home. Luckily, a few steps can get you through much of the choosing process up front. Here are the steps you should take to eliminate some roofing materials right off the bat so that you can do your due diligence and choose the roof that will work best for your particular needs.
First, eliminate the impossible
The first thing you should do is eliminate any roofing types that are completely unsuitable for your home and the Southern California climate. On this second point, most types of roofing material can be made to suit the climate in SoCal. However, you’ll see cedar shake shingles less often here because the dry weather and sun exposure may weather them more quickly.
You should also look into the types of materials that your roof can support. Heavier materials, such as concrete and clay tiles, take a stronger supporting structure and underlayment than lighter options. While you can often retrofit a house to support these materials, this could add significantly to your costs. So ask your Orange County roofing contractor whether your current structure will support all types of materials, and you may be able to eliminate some options off the bat.
You want to protect the exterior of your home. But sometimes you neglect one important area. It’s easy to do. The area in question, of course, is your roof. Elevated and often out of your field of vision, a rooftop generally doesn’t get the level of attention often lavished on the patio or garden. But it needs this attention just the same. Any Orange County roofer will tell you that. All too often, these professionals see the results of long-term roof neglect. And usually it’s not pretty. What are some of the possible results of neglect? One of the most common is roof deterioration.
Roof deterioration happens over time, typically during a long stretch of years. There are many causes of deterioration, but the most destructive is a steady barrage of sunlight and other elements. An Orange County roofing company can check for damage by conducting periodic roof inspections. These qualified experts also can take preventative measures if you so desire. Among the newest preventatives on the list is the composite roof. As the term implies, this type of roof incorporates a blend of materials in its composition. Shingles might be made of fiberglass, wood, polyester, or fiberglass. Other materials may be used, as well. The point is that the right combination can provide excellent protection against sunlight, as well as dependable water-proofing.
Is a composite roof right for you? That all depends. Often, the combined materials absorb and retain heat more readily than non-composites. Good news in the winter time, particularly if your heating bills are sky high. This retention, however, can be a disadvantage during the hotter summer months. Light colors can help in this regard. Composite roofs might also prove beneficial if you live in a windy canyon. Shingles made of the blend are excellent at standing up to powerful gusts.
If you have questions about composite roofs, be sure to reach out to Luke Roofing. A long-established, Anaheim, Orange County roofer, we provide prompt, reliable expertise for every residential roofing and commercial roofing need. No matter where you live in OC, you can count on Luke Roofing for the most efficient, reliable roofing solutions.
Excellent roof and solar installation!
Luke's was fantastic before during and after my roof and solar was installed. I couldn't be happier since I love dealing with professionals.
Highly recommended!
I'll start this review by stating that I have over 12 years of solar and roofing experience and have sold and/or overseen thousands of projects. So to say that I'm selective about contractors would...
I hired Luke Roofing to install a large solar system and a new roof for an addition to my home. They were on time, clean, and quick. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.
Really good crew.
Positive: Professionalism, Quality
Second job done by Luke Roofing for us...price was fine; timeline not important in our case, but they came when they said they would, and finished in two days. Really good crew, polite, considerate, and the work was quality. Cleanup was first class. One minor nick on our front gate on the way out, but easy agreement on how to handle it (accidents can happen to anybody). Really can't ask for more, and I would recommend them to anyone. Thanks guys.
Recommended by Friend, Very Reasonable!
Luke Roofing was recommended to us by a friend. Came out to give us a quote on a leak and had it fixed the same day! Very reasonable, at less than half the price quoted to us by another company. One year warranty. We would use them again for sure!
We recently remodeled our home and one of my husband's "must have" items was a solar system. I didn't know that much about it, but as I was the one overseeing the remodel, I was forced to get up to speed quickly on it.
I interviewed and received estimates from four vendors for a solar system. Gary Luke from Luke Roofing was the only vendor who told me up front that putting heavy solar panels on a flat roof that was 20 years old was a bad idea. When I asked the other vendors why they did not mention this, their answer was "Well, you sign the contract first, and then we send out our roof expert to tell you if you're in trouble or not." Which, of course I was going to be. Then I would have needed to find a roofing company, as most solar vendors do not do roofing.
The best advice I can give is that you want a vendor who can do both the roofing and the solar. That way, you get a streamlined project which is managed efficiently by one vendor who will stand behind the entire project.
Working with Luke Roofing was so wonderful. They were prompt, responsive, professional and their finished product was excellent quality and visually appealing. They went above and beyond my expectations and performed additional work simply to help me out. Why? Because they are also nice people. Good people. Isn't that who you want working for you?
I can say that the hardest part of this project was working with my electricity provider, who clearly is overwhelmed by the amount of customers wanting solar and lacks the resources to deal with it. Keep in mind that this is not a fast, quick process and that it will take some time to accomplish this major project. Be patient.
If you're looking forward to seeing your meter spin backward, I highly recommend Luke Roofing to get you there!
Really good crew.

On Time and Worked Hard
Luke roofing did a great job. the guys were great they where there every day at 7 am and worked hard all day. The roof looks great, and I was more than happy with the job
The roof was completed in 2 days and the rain gutters were completed in a couple of hours. They did a beautiful job. They went above and beyond in every aspect of the job. They were prompt and courteous. They worked as quickly and quietly as possible. We did not have to do anything. They pulled the permits, completed the roof, etc. I highly recommend this company and will definitely use them in the future.
They also cleaned up when they were done each day.
Bottom line: They did beautiful work and the job was completed under budget.
Good Honorable Company
In early 2019, when the severe rains came, I had two leaks in my upstairs master bathroom, about ten feet apart. I was somewhat desperate, and tried several roofing companies. The waiting list for everybody, including Luke, was lengthy, but i had no choice but to wait. I picked Luke because of high ratings on Angie's List. Glad I did.
As it turned out, one flat area required a new roof. I paid for that, approximately $3,000, and both leaks stopped. A few months later, both leaks reappeared. i couldn't believe it. No problem, Luke's people came out and inspected everything. A team of 3-4 men spent hours on the roof, going over everything. They determined that neither leak was related to the roof or their work I had one drain completely stuffed with leaves, and another area where the stucco on the wall around the roof was severely deteriorated. They showed me several pictures. After fixing those problems with a plumber and a stucco company, those two leaks are gone. No new leaks until last week.
Last week, a new leak appeared, in a totally different location. Erin Luke sent a man out to the house who fixed that leak immediately and I paid a small $200-$300 invoice.
This is a good honorable, company, who will show up when they say they will, and charge a very fair price. They are now my "go to" roofers. I've referred them to others.
